The Song

As I was reading from a few different books this morning, I found a theme emerging.  There is a song that is being sung by all of creation.  It began long ago and it will continue throughout all of eternity.  As a musician, I love metaphors in general, especially when they apply to music!  Music is something I can understand!  I thought to myself as I was reading today, ‘what a great comparison.’  Comparing our worship to God to an ongoing song of praise.  Very cool.

Here’s a little bit of what I was reading today.

Even though the people had forgotten, the birds and the flowers hadn’t forgotten—they still knew their song.  It was the song all of God’s creation had sung to him from the very beginning.  It was the song people’s hearts were made to sing:  ”God made us.  He loves us.  He is very pleased with us.”

It was why Jesus had come into the world:  to sing to them that wonderful song; to sing it not only with his voice, but with his whole life—so that God’s children could remember it and join in and sing it, too.

From The Jesus Storybook Bible

What God is saying is this:  ”Everything you are is Me.  Everything you have is Mine.  The life you live is my life that I’ve freely given you.  And I want worshippers who will be constantly reflecting my goodness and grace with that life.”

God wants our lives to be a seamless song of worship.  God wants our worship to be a way of life.

From The Air I Breathe by Louie Giglio

There is something about worship music that is practice for eternity… [In heaven] we will worship the Lord through all eternity around His throne.

Quote by Thomas Miller

Since the world began, all of creation has been singing a song of praise to our marvelous Creator.  The moon and the stars, the birds and the trees…they all declare the glory of God.  (Psalm 19:1)

And throughout all of eternity, we will sing praises to God, exalt His greatness and worship Him around His throne.

Even now, we have the chance to join in the symphony that has been making music to God, worshipping Him throughout time and will continue forever and always.

Thoughts on worship

So I have been reading this book on worship.  It’s called “Seven Words of Worship” (The Key to a Lifetime of Experiencing God) by Mike Harland and Stan Moser.  I came across the chapter with the seven words and I thought it was so good I had to share it.

Each of us was created by God for relationship with Him, but we can only enjoy that relationship by God’s grace.  God’s great love for us, demonstrated in Christ Jesus, initiates our response.  The only reasonable and adequate response is our our expression of worship.  As we worship, God has promised His presence.  We can always experience God in worship.

Let’s take a brief look at each of these seven words of worship and the definition that follows:

Creation—anything caused to come into existence; made, originated

Grace—goodwill or favor

Love—a strong, passionate affection for someone or something

Response—something said or done in answer or reply

Expression—putting into words, stating

Presence—the fact or state of being at a specified place

Experience—the act of living through an event, anything and everything observed or lived through training and personal participation

I love to worship God!  I love reading about what the bible has to say about worship, what books have to say about worship, podcasts, music, videos of worship.  And of course I love to worship God.  That doesn’t just happen when I’m on a stage somewhere leading people in worship.  Worship happens privately and corporately.  In fact, the worship that happens corporately (with a group of other believers) is often an overflow of the time you spend with Jesus personally and privately.  I believer we can go even deeper in worship corporately when we have nurtured that personal relationship with Jesus.  I love the word response.  Worship is truly a response.  The bible says that we love because he first loved us. (1 John 4:19). The book says,

The Bible gives a clear revelation of who God is and what He has done.  As we accept and believe this revelation, our natural response is to worship Him!

Christian brothers, I ask you from my heart to give your bodies to God because of His loving-kindness to us. Let your bodies be a living and holy gift given to God. He is pleased with this kind of gift. This is the true worship that you should give Him.” Romans 12:1 (NLB)
